SHELBY — Cleveland County residents hit the streets in the rain Saturday morning to participate in the Great American Cleanup.

Shelby Councilman Dicky Amaya said keeping the city clean should be a priority for everyone.

“I think all of Shelby, every citizen, should make an effort to pick up trash,” said Amaya.

Despite the inclement weather, several groups participated in the event by cleaning up areas along Dodd Street and uptown Shelby.

Amaya said he hoped the event will shed light on the need to keep the city clean.

“We don’t want the whole city of Shelby to be a dump,” said Amaya.

The cleanup was sponsored by The Star.
